it ends well (well it sort of does, one part of the ending was a bit hammy for my tastes) which retrospectively makes it much much better. It felt thematically tired at times, labouring points established in the earlier films rather than just concluding them and was a bit of a mess but I have to give it kudos for what it attempted to achieve and how close it came to achieving it. Not a film without flaws but it does enough to render the flaws less important.

I won't go into more details for fears of spoiling it.

Saw Expendables 2 yesterday despite never actually seeing the first in the end. Wasn't that bad tbf. Did you know Sly Stallone is 66 years old?  Sad He's 4 years away from being 70 FFS. SEVENTY YEARS OLD! Fuck.

I thought it was ok actually. Not great, but yeah, alright.

What has happened now though is it has lead to me watching (and re-watching) a load of action films...

Bourne Identity - Pretty good I guess but I've never really seen the fuss about these films really - 7/10
Universal Soldier - Lundgren and Van Damme bow - 8/10
Total Recall - Arnie bow - 8.5/10
First Blood II - Supposed to be the weakest of the series but I like it. Very different to the first but still quite cool - 7/10
Rambo III - Really quite naff - 3/10
Rambo - Very good but quite graphic... More like a mix of the first and second films rather than the over-the-top third - 8/10
Timecop - Van Damme bow Cheesy special effects bow - 8/10
Rocky Balboa - Probably the second best in the series (not really an action film but it's Sly so...) - 8/10
Bloodsport - Hadn't seen it since I was a kid, so much better than I remember. Van Damme's best film - 8.5/10
Red Scorpion - A really crap action film but Lundgren is not bad in it as the Russian KGB agent who switches sides - 4/10
Kickboxer - Never seen it all the way through before, but again, really liked it. - 7.5/10
JCVD - Van Damme plays Van Damme who is taken hostage in a post office in Belgium and the police think he's responsible. Very, very weird. Not really much of an action film either and reminded me more of Breathless than it did Timecop or anything like that. Still flippin' awesome, mind - 8.5/10
Unknown - Not as good as Taken but still thought it was quite decent for an action-thriller - 7/10
Masters of the Universe - Yep. The He-Man film. It's awful and Dolph isn't in it enough. I knew it was shit when I saw it as a kid, I still think it's shit now. - 3/10
Cyborg - In a post-apocalyptic dystopia, Van Damme fights land pirates whilst trying to get a cyborg to the other side of America so she can transfer the key data to the people who need it so they can stop the plague that has wiped out most of humanity. What you imagine it is like from that description? Yep, that's what it's like - 5/10
Infernal Affairs - HK Cop thriller that was remade as The Departed (so more of a thriller than action film really). Not as good as Departed but still bloody awesome - 9/10
Dredd - The 3D actually looks brilliant and the whole film is what the original should've been like - 8/10
No Retreat, No Surrender - A very early JCVD film that he's in for about 10 minutes in total playing a Russian gangster who can do karate. The rest of the film follows the karate kid's retarded sibling who is visited by the ghost of Bruce Lee to help him win a fight. Make of that what you will... - 1/10
Enemy of the State - Again, more of a thriller, but thought Will Smith and Gene Hackman were good. Some very dodgy technology in it  laugh - 7/10
Lionheart - Another great Van Damme film where he teams up with a homeless guy to win some money in underground fights to get back at the people who killed his brother and pay off his medical bills, but it's much better than I've made it sound - 7/10
Double Impact - Van Damme plays twins who were separated at 6months old. They get back at the people who killed their parents eventually. Also features Bolo Yeung bow - 7/10
Commando - Arnie doesn't have a lot of money but what he does have is a very particular set of skills, and he will look for the people who have taken his daughter, he will find them, and he will kill them with the biggest fuck off guns he can get his muscley paws on all whilst lying about what order he's going to kill people in, correcting people when they're "wrong" and eating green berets for his breakfast. Arnie bow - 8/10

Lately I have watched

Land and Freedom - Great obscure film about the Spanish Civil War

Mad Max: Fury Road - really good but Tom Hardy can't act, he just pulls this expression huh and then mumbles something.

Calvary - very good, bleak film
