Like the Lars & Giddsey Shabbang but with a little bit of the pizazz, flamboyance, glitz and general campishness that is maybe lacking from the regular talk of the everyday drudgery of the English Premier League, FA/Carling Cup and Champions League.

The World Cup usually brings people to football who don't normally watch it, or are only occasional viewers, so don't be afraid to post here if you don't normally post in football threads!

Also, for that reason, I have subbed out the craft and guile that Wayne 'Giddsey' Rooney brings to the football threads, and replaced it with the slightly error prone, sort-of-safe-hands of David "Schaf" James.

That last one with the umbrella is McClaren btw.

First topic of conversation should probably be the provisional squad.

30 players, and only 23 can actually be part of the world cup squad. Which 7 should be dropped?

Quote
England's 30-man provisional squad for the World Cup finals:

Goalkeepers: Joe Hart, David James, Robert Green.

Defenders: Leighton Baines, Jamie Carragher, Ashley Cole, Michael Dawson, Rio Ferdinand, Glen Johnson, Ledley King, John Terry, Matthew Upson, Stephen Warnock.

Midfielders: Gareth Barry, Michael Carrick, Joe Cole, Steven Gerrard, Tom Huddlestone, Adam Johnson, Frank Lampard, Aaron Lennon, James Milner, Scott Parker, Theo Walcott, Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Forwards: Darren Bent, Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe, Emile Heskey, Wayne Rooney.

the drop list:
Heskey, Carragher, Warnock, Upson, Wright-Phillips, Parker, and one of Carrick or Barry depending on Barry's fitness

Agree about Carragher (shouldn't be in the squad due to his shiteness and the fact he wasn't involved in the qualifiers), Warnock and Parker.

I think Heskey, Upson and SWP are shoe-ins for the squad. Heskey is Englands number 9, despite how crap he's been for Villa this season. Upson is our first choice back up to Ferdinand and Rio, despite not having a great season either. SWP has also been an ever-present. Featured in every England squad under Capello, I think.

Carrick or Barry, not too fussed about. Neither are in the squad on current form, but I feel the same way. Only one of them needs to be in the squad.

I would drop Dawson, Carragher, Warnock, Parker, Adam Johnson, Darren Bent, Barry (if not fit)/Carrick

Darren Bent scored allot of goals with not the greatest service.  I'd rather have King rather than Upson as the next best behind Ferdinand and Terry especially as King has played more league football than Ferdinand last I looked. Dawson has a good partnership with King and has had a fantastic season, Terry has been short on the form he has previously shown and Rio and King haven't played much and Upson isn't all that.

I'm not fussed on Carrick and Barry if only Hargreaves wasn't completely fucked for 18 months.

Aye.

I remember being laughed at for thinking Hargreaves was great before the last world cup.

You bunch of fickle bastards.

Also, Bent hasn't been great for England. Like Fowler/Ian Wright/Andy Cole.. good in the league, not so good for England.

Unlike Heskey crap for both.

I always liked Hargreaves and thought him better than most other midfielders, he was tragically overlooked because he played for a Kraut team.

Heskey had a fairly solid qualifying campaign. I'm not a fan of him, myself. But he's probably the only English player capable of performing the role he plays at this level.

Carlton Cole or Kevin Davies arguably could, but neither really have the level of experience as Heskey.

With the system we play, yes.

You could play Rooney as a lone striker, in a formation similar to the Man Utd set up, like this:

Green
Johnson, Terry, Ferdinand, A Cole
Barry
Lampard   Gerrard
Lennon                            Milner
Rooney

Or like Liverpools:

Green
Johnson, Terry, Ferdinand, A Cole
Lampard, Barry
Lennon           Gerrard             Milner
Rooney

But it'll probably be the safest 4-4-2 system which we utilised throughout the qualifying rounds:

Green
Johnson, Terry, Ferdinand, A Cole
Walcott, Lampard, Barry, Gerrard
Rooney, Heskey
