We have an LED LG TV that has great picture quality  nod , but it did break less than 12 months after we'd bought it. Had to get the screen replaced  ohmy but it was still in warranty so nae bother.

Erm it's an LED 42LE5300.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/LG-42LE5300-42-inch-Widescreen-Freeview/dp/B003FMSIPO

1080p, 42" screen, 100hz, 4 HDMI ports with 3 scart ports, usb port, has freeview built in (but never used it.. don't think it receives hd channels either) and is just generally awesome.

Apart from the screen problem, of course.

That's a nice one. We're looking at this baby: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-UE46D6530-Widescreen-Internet-Freeview/dp/tech-data/B004TB4YL2/ref=de_a_smtd

but I'm worried it's going to look absurdly big in the living room  unsure

We were in the shops today and they gave us a paper thing to take away that's a size guide so you can see how big it is in your house and it's a monster of a telly.  eyepop

It's smaller brother is our other consideration: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-UE40D6530-Widescreen-Internet-Freeview/dp/B004TB4XWW/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1316280799&sr=1-1

We've already picked out some speakers and have a few nice stands were looking at.

What kind of sound set up have you got?

Also does anyone know about HDMI cables? In the shop the guy was quiet keen on a fairly expensive one but to be honest I have no idea is it worth splashing out a bit on a decent cable? Is there noticable difference in quality which cables you connect the sky box/blue ray player with?

Yes I may finally be joining the blu ray bandwagon, not convinced at all a new disc format is neccessary but it seems a shame to waste the potential if I'm going to fork out for the tv  chinscratch

NO NO FUCKING NO!

With digital there is either a perfect picture or no picture at all, except a very narrow window just before complete loss of signal. For the short distance between the TV and the sky box, just about anything will work perfectly. If you want to connect between longer distances, like 5 metres or more, then you need a decent cable, decent means about 1 per metre. If you pay much more than 2 per metre then you're basically paying extra for snake oil.

As for blu-ray there's no reason not to get one once the players and the films on them have got down to a decent price.

No way, Jose. You need one of these bad boys to enjoy HD properly:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Monster-MC-1000HDex-22M-EU-Ultra-High/dp/B001FBR9TS/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1316347712&sr=1-2

I am in no way joking. This is utterly true. Cog quite obviously has no idea what he's talking about. The more expensive, the more awesome. This has been proven by trolls experts on t'internet.

 shakehead

I have a 5.0 surround sound system, but it's broked Sad But the sound on the tv I have is pretty decent anyway. My mother in law has a 50" Samsung Plasma tv and the sound on that is crap. Just about alright for watching tele, but it sounds.... rattley  confused Don't really know how to describe it properly, but it doesn't sound good. My dad has a 42" Samsung Plasma and that sounds fine, though. Neither of them have ever had any problems with their tv's, and they must be about 2 or 3 years old.

I'd recommend going to a Richer Sounds store. They are ace, know what they're talking about, and sometimes give discounts/free stuff if you buy an expensive tele  nod

I'm sure sound problems with TVs are because of the recent fad of sticking the speakers in the back for nothing other than aesthetics. Because they are pointing in the wrong direction you are hearing an echo off the wall rather than directly from the speakers, and if you have the TV right against the wall, the sound is blasting right back into the speakers rather than around the TV out into the room which is even worse. And the you get problems with flimsy plastic mountings which can make the speakers rattle, and the speakers themselves are cheap compared to the hundreds of pounds you spend on the TV, and they are also physically too small for the volume of sound they are producing.

Hmm maybe. But her tv isn't flat against a wall. But you're probably right.

Aye we're looking at using sound through speakers rather than the telly.

Still not sure about the giant sized one, it would be awesome but maybe too silly?

On the other hand it's a true thing of beauty, and it (just about, with some rearranging) fits in the space. I'm trying to think of ways to convince myself to go for the massive one.  chinscratch

But at the same time trying to be an adult about it and choose the one that makes sense

how big is your current Tele? 46" isn't too absurd tbh. I've seen bigger... But I guess it does depend on how big your living room is. Some people aren't keen on a tv being the focal point of a living room, but I don't care. I'd have gone for the 46" if I could've afforded it.

That said, we have a 42" tv and that is big enough really.

Current one is a massive (in depth) 32" tv, it's very very ancient, but it was free. Whatever we get is going to be a huge upgrade.

Living room isn't that big, but with a bit of shifting things around the 46 should ( unsure) fit.

Was looking at 55" so that when we look at the 46" one again it won't look so big.

I think it's just seen as chavy to have a massive tv is all.

I'm not bothered how it's seen, I'll have a massive telly  biggrin

Also I've discovered that the new batman game is going to be proper 3D, so I might get use out of the 3D after all  dance
